EVENTS/PROGRAM

Throughout Nevis’ history, artistic and cultural expression has been used to describe, and shape our experience. Nevisians are of African descent, and since the days of slavery, folk dances and folk music have been a way of life. Music and the arts have played a prominent role, particularly at Christmas when field workers were given free time for leisure activities.

During the welcome reception our visitors will experience a taste of the Nevisian culture and art form. One of our young, talented and renowned folk groups--The Sensational Dancers will thrillyour hearts with a sensational treat. They are a certainly a delight to behold.

The Sensational Dancers

The Sensational Dancers made their debut on June 17, 2004 at the school’s graduation ceremony at the Girls’ Guide Headquarters. At their first public appearance they performed to the song Miracles by Celine Dion. The schools guidance counselor and accomplished singer and dancer, Mrs. Jevon Dyer, choreographed the dance. This was indeed a thrilling and sensational treat.

When Mrs. Dyer left for the United States, Ms. Shellita Browne, a young teacher and member of the Adventist group, Youths in Motion assumed the responsibility of working with the group. In 2005, the group that consisted of only three members performed at the school’s symposium, a professional development session held at Mount Nevis. This performance was televised and as a result the dancers have made a statement – that children with special needs are also talented individuals.

The group has performed as a dignified group at the following events:

  • A Special Education workshop sponsored by the Nevis Teachers Union and the Special Education Unit in October, 2005
  • Teacher’s annual “Professional Day” in October 2005 & 2006
  • The Bucks Hill Wesleyan Holiness Dance Fest, December 2005
  • The Department of Culture and the department of Education Black History program, February 2006
  • The Nevis Theatre Guild program Star Search at Nite Movies, January 2006

Presently, the group consists of eight dancers. The Sensational dancers have been advocates for Special Education awakening the public at all levels to the talents of our students with special needs. They are lovely to behold!
